Writing as a Very Serious professional

It's not that it takes away from the Craft of writing, but it does reduce it - minimise it - to a thing you do to Make Money. It's still a passion, of course, but it's not the fire-and-acid-rain fervour of my earlier work.

One could argue that my first blog posts (how long ago that was) comprised a checklist of amateur mistakes. Nevertheless.

The words come as a thick sludge to me now. The metronome of once-natural meter now s-tut-t-er-s. In my twenties, brightly lit with the ambition of Becoming A Writer, this would have been unimaginable.

I see the effects of my Profession on my writing: subject-verb-object order. Beginning a sentence with a gerund too if I'm feeling zesty.

This is not a practice session -

This is a love letter to why I love writing - the music of a good sentence, the waterfall crash of a one-word epiphany, the sashay of words across a page (or blog post, in this case).

Some may call this effusive. Yes. That is the point. Dramatic? Also correct.

In a world of mass-produced minimalism, maybe a little act of superfluity is rebellion.
